By Rev. Dr. Francis Bashan I. ONE POWERFUL PRINCIPLE Your Marriage Must Have a Unifying Purpose to Be Honorable and Sustainable. Every honorable and sustainable marriage must be built upon a clearly understood and shared purpose. The purpose of your marriage defines its essence, establishes its direction, and explains its existence. It answers one fundamental question: WHY? Why are you married? Why do you desire marriage? What greater purpose should your union accomplish? Whether you are single, courting, engaged, or married, discovering and embracing God's purpose for marriage is essential to building a relationship that honors Him and fulfills its intended purpose. II. TWO PRACTICAL STRATEGIES 1. Strategy One: Understand Your Identity as a Human Being. Who are you? Before understanding the purpose of marriage, you must understand your identity. Genesis 1:26 reveals that humanity was created in the image and likeness of God. Your identity, therefore, begins with your Creator, not your marital status, personal achievements, or social expectations. Understanding who created you provides the foundation for discovering why you were created. 2. Strategy Two: Understand Why God Created Male and Female. Why did God create humanity as male and female? Genesis 1:27–28 reveals God's original design and purpose for humanity. From a biblical perspective, marriage unites a mature man and woman in a covenant relationship through which they can pursue God's purposes together. Understanding this divine design helps couples move beyond personal preferences toward a shared purpose, mutual responsibility, and lasting fruitfulness. III. THREE ACTION STEPS 1. STUDY—Discover God's Original Purpose. Read Genesis 1:26–28 carefully. Identify what Scripture reveals about humanity's identity, divine blessing, fruitfulness, multiplication, dominion, and responsibility. 2. PRAY—Seek Divine Wisdom and Understanding. Pray: Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom to understand Your purpose for marriage. Help me build a relationship that honors You, fulfills Your intentions, and produces lasting fruitfulness. Amen. 3. MEDITATE—Examine and Align Your Marriage. Reflect on Genesis 1:26–28. Ask yourself: Does my current or future marriage reflect God's original purpose? What attitudes, priorities, decisions, or behaviors must change?
